Adventures in Mandarin Chinese depicts a Westerner’s experience in learning the standard language of Mainland China. Occasionally overwhelming but always rewarding, the long path towards fluency will be captured on this site for the amusement and utility of those interested.
Early in life, I was diagnosed with a peculiar disease: the travel bug. Symptoms include leaving the continent as often as humanly possible and encountering interesting cultures along the way. Preventative treatment consists in visiting the travel medicine clinic prior to each overseas trip.
Although my academic background does not fall into the field of linguistics, I am utterly fascinated by languages. My motivation to learn Mandarin Chinese is fueled by many interests, and I will mention two: the ability to communicate in the official language of the world’s most populous nation, and the ability to further overcome language barriers with a handful of friends and acquaintances.
